Oct 28, 2017
Wiesbaden, Germany – Commander JFC Brunssum, General Salvatore Farina, participated in the 25th Commanders Conference of European Armies on 25 - 27 October, at Headquarters US Army Europe, hosted by Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, Commanding General US Army Europe (USAREUR).
The aim of this annual conference, organised by USAREUR, was to bring together senior land forces commanders from 39 nations for 3 days of discussions with regard to security cooperation and military partnerships.
On the morning of the 27th, Commander JFC Brunssum was invited to lead the panel discussion on NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence (eFP). General Farina presented his operational vision, emphasizing the joint operational perspective – integrating air and maritime in the support of the 4 deployed eFP Battlegroups. He explained the challenges of integrating the Battlegroups into their Host Nation Brigades, as well as the NATO Force Structure, concentrating on the critical nature of relationship-building across the chain of command.
The General then discussed the evolution of eFP into a credible deterrence capability and the associated challenges that NATO is confronted by. The use of exercises and other activity to develop and refine situational awareness across the domains was emphasized as critical to ensure that operational effect is maximised. General Farina concluded by stressing the wider impact of eFP in the context of deterrence, specifically its effect as ‘the catalyst for progress’ across the Alliance.
