Brunssum, The Netherlands – On Thursday, 15 August, the AFNORTH International School (AIS) welcomed new staff members in the frame of an orientation event for teachers and supporting staff prior to the start of the new school year.

This yearly event serves to introduce and update old and new AIS staff on administrative and security procedures. In particular, it provides an opportunity to officially welcome all the newcomers. Among the circa 100 teachers of the school, 25 joined the school staff.

Representing the Commander JFC Brunssum, the Chief of Staff (COS), Lieutenant General Jean-Pierre Perrin, addressed the AIS staff, underlining the importance of the school for both the NATO personnel and their families as well as the Community of Brunssum. Gen Perrin said: “With the AFNORTH International School, you serve NATO well by making it easy for our staff members to join JFC Brunssum, as they know their children will find superb schooling opportunities. And for the students, you lay the foundation for their future by teaching them respect and deepen their understanding of differences, thus becoming better prepared for a life in an international environment in a fast changing world.”
AFNORTH International School was founded by the US, the UK, Canada and Germany in 1967 and provides education for some 900 students aged 3 – 18 from families of personnel serving at NATO entities in Brunssum and the wider region. It comprises of four sections representing the founding members that follow the respective national educational programmes. Common areas such as library, canteen, sport facilities, after- school programmes and transport are shared. Children of NATO staff members are admitted to one of the sections, based on availability and language skills.
