Brunssum, the Netherlands - A military change of command ceremony was held at the Hendriks Barracks in Brunssum. Major General Walter Ohm (Deu Army) handed over responsibility for the German Delegation from Colonel Klaus W. Bücklein (Deu Air Force) to Colonel Günter Thiermann (Deu Air Force). Many guests, including Colonel Dr. Sarholz (Deu Army Ret’d), former Commander of the German Delegation and Colonel Martin Klein (Deu Army Ret’d), former Chief PAO, as well as many other distinguished guests honoured the event with their presence.
General Ohm reflected on the duties of command, the geographical challenge that this particular command has – from bases in the Netherlands right up to the German contributions of the NATO Force Integration Units in Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and the 3 Baltic states. He ended with a short "Tour d’Horizon” of the 44 years of Colonel Bücklein’s service, finishing with a personal compliment to the outgoing Commander on his journey to retirement: "I have known you as an officer who always demonstrates high standards of professional conduct, who shows strong, dynamic leadership, who sets realistic goals and, most importantly, who concentrates on developing solutions! You always understood my intent, with the attendant specified and implied tasks, acting competently with limited direction and guidance to deliver successful mission completion.”
After the hand-over of the flag of the German Delegation to Colonel Thiermann, Colonel Bücklein was offered a lap of honour through the barracks with the members of the German Delegation forming an honour guard flanking the streets.
