JFC Brunssum Non-Commissioned Officers tour WWII Battle of Nijmegen sites

Brunssum, the Netherlands – On 21 Jun a group of 30 non-commissioned officers from the staff at JFC Brunssum toured various sites in the vicinity of Nijmegen that had been fought over during Operation MARKET GARDEN and the Battle of Nijmegen (Sept 1944).

Operation MARKET GARDEN was made famous by the Hollywood movie, ‘The Longest Day’ and was the largest airborne operation up to that point of the war. Despite failing to achieve its objective of securing the bridges over the Rhine, the operation provides many operational and tactical lessons that remain relevant to modern military operations.

The JFCBS team were treated to an excellent analysis of the successes, failures and key lessons of the operation, which they will take back to their day to day roles and use to enhance their professional skills and development. Included in the trip was a visit to the excellent Dutch National Liberation Museum and the team were also able to get some physical exercise as the battlefield tour was run as a bicycle trip!

There is an excellent website available for anyone wishing to travel the liberation route themselves:
