NATO Force Integration Units (NFIUs) are part of the NATO Force Structure (NFS) under the primary responsibility of Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR); they have no deployable remit. NFIU Hungary is one of six NFIUs under operational Command and Control (C2) of Joint Logistics Support Command Brunssum (JLSGBS).

Mission: assist and facilitate the rapid deployment and sustainment of the NATO and other allied forces.

Main task:

  • To provide a crucial link to the respective HNs for SA and development and maintenance of the RSN during peacetime and in the transition to crisis
  • To maintain lines of engagement with their HN civil/military agencies used to provide rapid and direct responses to help unlock complex issues
  • To contribute to their HN to the planning, coordination, training and evaluation/assessment for
  1. Development of Reinforcement and Sustainment Network (RSN), Joint Logistics Support Networks (JLSNs) and Joint Logistics Support Areas (JLSAs) 
  2. Development of the enablement SA
  3. Reinforcement by Forces (RbyFo) – support the transition from/to the strategic movement leg to the Reception, Staging and Onward Movement (RSOM)/Rearward Movement Staging and Dispatch (RMSD) parts and sustainment of Allied combat power
  4. Contribution to wider Situational Awareness (SA) and understanding
  5. Support and involvement in all phases of the planning process as directed by Higher Headquarters (HHQ), including fostering coherence with national defence plans

2015

  • 5 February The Minister of Defence of Hungary requests the establishment of an NFIU in Hungary
  • February Selection of COM NFIU HUN and HUN personnel begins
  • 28 August The North Atlantic Council approves the Hungarian request
  • 8-9 October Defence ministers decide to establish NFIUs in Hungary and Slovakia
  • 12 October SACEUR approves the NFIU in HUN Implementation Plan

2016

  • 15 January Appointment of Colonel László GARAS as COM NFIU HUN
  • 18 February Visit of COM MNC NE
  • 21 April Reconstruction of permanent location begins
  • 2 May Move to temporary location
  • 1 June NFIU in HUN reaches national initial capability
  • 1 July Arrival of the first international officer (ESP)
  • 1 September Activation of HUN NFIU
  • 18 November Official Opening Ceremony of HUN NFIU
