General Erhard Bühler visited the allied member state Iceland

Brunssum, the Netherlands - General Erhard Bühler, Commander Joint Force Command Brunssum, visited the allied member state Iceland from 26 to 27 August.  In meetings, round tables, briefings and discussions also with the Icelandic Director of Security and Defence, Mr Arnór Sigurjónsson, inter alia, NATO’s Air Policing mission, the transatlantic unity and the increasing importance (in security terms) of the High North were the central themes to be briefed and discussed. The High North, comprised of the Arctic countries Denmark, Iceland and Norway, is a key focus point for security in the transatlantic area, whilst the sustainment of transatlantic unity is one of NATO’s core, and most prominent, goals.

The two senior officers also interchanged on NATO’s Command Structure adaptation process, discussing the JFCBS main operational role and Iceland’s importance in this context.

General Bühler underlined the importance of NATO’s Air Policing in Iceland, as it clearly demonstrates  the values of democracy, sovereignty, and mutual security providing security in a manner exemplifying and reflecting these during missions.

Note: NATO Air Policing is a peacetime mission, which aims to preserve the security of Alliance airspace. It is a collective task and involves the continuous presence – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – of fighter aircraft and crews, which are ready to react quickly to airspace violations.
