Governor & Ambassadors Visit JFC Brunssum

Brunssum, the Netherlands Friday 13 September General Erhard Bühler, Commander Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum, hosted the Governor of Limburg, Ambassadors to the Netherlands from Albania, Estonia, Denmark, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Portugal and Turkey as well as a number of other dignitaries from Canada, the Czech Republic, Germany and Latvia. Amongst other topics subsequently touched upon, a comprehensive briefing by the Commander emphasised the role and responsibilities of JFC Brunssum in connection to defence planning, enhanced Forward Presence, NATO Force Integration Units in northern Europe, the NATO Response Force and HQs activities in the realm of partnership & cooperation.

A thoughtful discussion followed in which the Commander was asked how difficult his task was to command a multi-national organisation. In response the General said:

Of course a multi-national structure brings challenges, predominantly associated with language, and opportunities, mainly due to the breadth of cultures and experience. But, overall, it has been my experience that the result is more opportunities than difficulties. I find multi-nationality a great benefit.

The programme included a briefing in the HQs’ Joint Operations Centre that provided insight to the briefings an operational level commander receives on a daily basis.

The visit concluded with a tour of the AFNORTH International School where the Director, Mrs Kathy Wood, supported by her deputy, Mr Rob Bindels, provided insight to the unique educational concept of the school that has a vision to inspire respect, resilience and the ability to think and act inclusively in our international environment.
