JFCBS Commander visits Latvia

Brunssum, the Netherlands – JFC Brunssum Commander, General Jörg Vollmer, visited Latvia 16th and 17th of September.

This trip was part of an ongoing series of visits to enhanced Forward Presence Battle Groups (eFP BGs) and NATO Force Integration Unit (NFIU) Host Nations to underline the importance of operational readiness and the Alliance’s unwavering commitment to Collective Defence.

“NATO stands together as one…We Are NATO”

In a prepared statement, NATO’s position of united strength was reiterated, as was Latvia’s integral role in the future of the Alliance:

"Latvia remains a great contributor to the NATO family and I am here to further develop the already strong bond between us.”

While in Latvia, General Vollmer’s schedule was full. His meetings and engagements were conducted in Riga and the surrounding area, where he visited NATO and Latvian National Armed Forces (LNAF) military institutions. Whilst touring these, General Vollmer spent time discussing the key aspects of NATO’s future defence agenda with the Latvian Defence Minister and Deputy Prime Minister - Dr Artis Pabriks and, Commander of the Joint Headquarters and Chief of Defence, Lieutenant General Leonids Kalnins.

The Commanders’ visit also took him through Riga’s historic centre ‘Vecrīga’, or ‘Old Riga’, where he visited the world-renowned St Peter’s Church, a triumph of Latvian architecture and a cultural landmark of Riga’s skyline.
