NATO increases testing capacity in Afghanistan

Brunssum, the Netherlands, Tuesday 26 May 2020

The virus knows no borders and no entity. As Afghanistan continues to suffer from rising numbers of infections, NATO increases its efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country. Last week, more testing equipment arrived in Kabul. The system named “GeneExpert 16” has enough capacity to allow 16 tests per hour and thus boosts the Alliance’s contribution to the fight against the pandemic.

The equipment was dispatched from the United States and is part of a coordinated NATO-wide effort. It aims to enhance NATO’s RESOLUTE SUPPORT mission medical capabilities in Afghanistan and includes additional medical personnel as well as evacuation capacity. Thus it preserves the already existing medical capacity in RESOLUTE SUPPORT.
