General Bühler’s final staff address

Under strict obedience of COVID-19 restrictions, the outgoing commander of Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum, General Erhard Buehler, paid farewell to his staff members on April 21st.

“I was honoured and privileged to be your commander. You are a highly committed, competent and connected staff and I am deeply impressed by the professionalism you are showing to cope with the current challenges”, the German officer said in a video-transmitted address to his team.

Bühler mentioned in particular the quick adaption of his headquarters to the outbreak of COVID-19. “We have taken the necessary steps to protect our force, you established a shift system to maintain sustainability and you have made it to remain operational”, he underlined.

The General also commended his team for keeping up with their critical tasks to provide deterrence and defence on the northern flank of NATO and to support NATOs ongoing mission in Afghanistan. “I can only applaud your discipline in these special times as I know that also your families are facing serious difficulties”, he said.

In his address, the outgoing commander also assured the staff of continuity being provided by his successor. “General Jörg Vollmer likes team spirit and team work as I do, thus with him you will be able to answer any call”, he added.

Bühler concluded with special thanks to his Deputy, British Lieutenant General Stuart Skeats. “I was proud to have him at my side and he represented this headquarters in an excellent way.”

After having passed the flag, General Erhard Bühler will retire from active duty after 44 years in the German Armed Forces.
