Former Commander General Leopold Chalupa died in the age of 93

Brunssum, The Netherlands 04 August 2021 – It is with great sadness that the loss of one of our former commanders - General Leopold Chalupa (DEU Army, Rtd.) – is announced.

General Chalupa passed in Aachen/Aix-la-Chapelle (DEU) on 30 July 2021 at the age of 93. General Chalupa was Commander-in-Chief HQ Allied Forces Central Europe (HQ AFCENT) from 1983 until 1987.

During his tenure as Commander in Chief (CINCENT), General Chalupa progressed the primary mission of AFCENT to advance the readiness, deployment and employment of Central Region Land and Air Forces in order to maintain a credible defense posture against improved force capabilities of the Warsaw Pact.

Specifically, his personal efforts to work with national leaders lead to a unified Central Region policy on alert and deployment guidance.

As CINCENT, General Chalupa also enhanced harmonization between the Allied Command Structure, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands by spearheading negotiations on responsibilities between the National Authorities and NATO Commanders.

All personnel at HQ JFCBS extend their deepest condolences to the General's family, his close relatives & friends.

The funeral will take place at the 11 August in Aachen.
