SNMCMG1 CARRIES OUT HISTORICAL ORDNANCE DISPOSAL OFF LATVIAN COAST

From 7 to 14 April, Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 (SNMCMG1) conducted NATO Historical Ordnance Disposal Operations (HODOPS) in the Irbe Strait and the Gulf of Riga. The Baltic Sea remains severely littered with mines from the two world wars. Latvian forces conduct most of the historical ordnance operations with Allies in support, in order to share the burden. It can be too expensive and challenging for one nation to carry out an historical ordnance operation by itself.

NATO JETS INTERCEPT RUSSIAN MILITARY AIRCRAFT OVER BALTIC SEA

On 20 April, NATO scrambled fighter jets from Estonia, Lithuania, and Poland to intercept Russian fighters, bombers, and surveillance aircraft over the Baltic Sea. As NATO radars tracked unidentified aircraft over the Baltic Sea, NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre (CAOC) at Uedem, Germany, launched allied fighter aircraft. The event serves to demonstrate NATO’s sustained vigilance and responsiveness to air incidents and the collective effort of Allies to keep the airspace safe for everyone.
