Brunssum, The Netherlands -Today at Headquarters Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum (HQ JFCBS), German General Jörg Vollmer handed command of the headquarters to his successor, Italian General Guglielmo Luigi Miglietta.
NATO's top General, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Tod D. Wolters, presided over the outdoor ceremony with almost 200 dignitaries and guests in attendance. Attendees represented a wide variety of organisations from the NATO Command Chain, European capitals, the Host Nation, North America, and National and International organizations.
HQ JFCBS is one of the three operational military Headquarters in NATO together with JFCs Naples and Norfolk. It is also notable that, out of NATO's four most senior military Headquarters it is the only one commanded by a European General.
In his departing speech, General Vollmer described that to be a successful leader one must trust and have confidence in you. He thanked all those who trusted him and for their confidence during his period as Commanding General of HQ JFCBS.
General Wolters stated that NATO is currently dealing with a gigantic strategic challenge and thanked General Vollmer for his outstanding leadership.
During the reception, General Vollmer was presented with two awards – namely the Polish Armed Forces Medal in Gold and the Italian Defence General Staff Joint Recommendation Medal. General Vollmer received the awards from the Polish Chief of Defence General Rajmund Andrzejczak and the Italian Chief of Army Lieutenant General Pietro Serino. The General also received a parting gift from the Mayor of Brunssum, Wilma van der Rijt, in recognition of the close partnership JFCBS has with the local community.
General Miglietta, the new Commander JFCBS, underlined the complexity of the challenges we face today but made clear that the Alliance's will and determination to deter and to defend our values is stronger than ever before.
