Northern Europe Operational Update Weeks 38/39 2022

In Hungary and Slovakia, troops from NATO’s Multinational Battlegroups have been participating in certification exercises, demonstrating their ability to protect Alliance Territory. Exercises BRAVE WARRIOR 22, in Hungary, and STRONG COHESION 22, in Slovakia, were the final milestones in the creation of two of NATO’s newest multinational battlegroups. Battlegroup Slovakia and Battlegroup Hungary are two out of four new multinational units established since Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. Both Battlegroups are now fully ready to Deter and Defend on NATO’s Eastern Flank.

In the Czech Republic, over 900 soldiers and aircrew from seven Allied nations took part in Exercise AMPLE STRIKE 22. The skies over the Czech Republic were the scene of live-flying and live-firing exercises, with aircraft guided onto their targets by Joint Tactical Air Controllers. The exercise also showed the Czech Armed Forces’ ability to provide host nation support to Allied units and aircraft.

In Hungary, thousands of runners took part in the 17th annual NATO Run, in Budapest. Civilian and military participants from age 8 to 84 raced over 4 and 10k distances in the centre of the Hungarian capital. Teams from across NATO took part, including from Headquarters NATO Multinational Division (Centre) in Székesfehérvár and NATO Force Integration Unit Hungary.
