Visit of Admiral Michel Hofman, Belgium Chief of Defence

Brunssum, The Netherlands – On 11th March 2022, General Jörg Vollmer, Commander of Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFCBS) welcomed a visit by Admiral Michel Hofman, the Chief of Defence of Belgium.

A founder member of NATO, Belgium hosts Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Mons, and the NATO Headquarters in Brussels. Belgium regularly contributes troops to NATO operations, including the German-led enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup (eFP) in Lithuania. Most recently, the country deployed 300 soldiers to Romania at short notice in response to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Together with French troops, they will form a Franco-Belgian tactical group under the banner of the NATO Response Force (NRF), to deter and defend against attacks on NATO soil.

Admiral Hofman's visit is a timely opportunity to build and enhance mutual relationships between Belgium and JFCBS, which for 2022 is the Operational-level Commander of both NRF and eFP. Topics for discussion included the emerging situation in Ukraine, steps to reinforce and sustain NATO's defensive networks.
