Assistant Secretary General for Defence Policy and Planning visits JFC Brunssum

Brunssum, The Netherlands – Mr Angus Lapsley, Assistant NATO Secretary General for Defence Policy and Planning, visited JFC Brunssum on 17th April 2023.

As one of the top team of senior civilian officials at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Mr Lapsley leads the part of NATO responsible for capability and force planning across a range of topics including posture, plans and nuclear deterrence. A career civil servant from the United Kingdom, Mr Lapsley previously worked in a number of UK government departments, including a period as the UK’s Political and Security Ambassador to the European Union. He took up his current post in September last year.

After a welcome from Commander JFC Brunssum, General Guglielmo Luigi Miglietta, Mr Lapsley received a series of briefings on the headquarters, its history and its current operations and priorities. The briefings enabled the Assistant Secretary General to discuss issues and challenges faced by one of NATO’s three Operational-level military headquarters, and to understand how the headquarters works to deter adversaries and, if required, defend Northern Europe.

For the headquarters, the visit provided an excellent opportunity to both inform and receive guidance from the highest political level of the Alliance.
