Commander JFC Brunssum visits Sweden

Brunssum, the Netherlands - On 02 September 2024, Commander JFC Brunssum, General Guglielmo Luigi Miglietta, started a 3-day visit to Sweden and Finland. The tour serves to foster the co-operation between HQ JFC Brunssum and the two Nordic NATO countries, and to discuss security challenges in the Baltic Sea Region.
The Swedish Armed Forces are truly a formidable empowerment of NATO’s defence posture in the Baltic Sea Region

On his first stop, he was welcomed by the Swedish Chief Joint Operations, Lieutenant General Carl-Johan Edström at Karlberg Castle in Stockholm. “The Swedish Armed Forces warmly welcome Gen Miglietta to Sweden. As a new NATO member we are ready to closely cooperate with HQ JFC Brunssum and strengthen the Alliance’ defence postures in our area,” Lt Gen Edström said.

On the second day of his visit, General Miglietta also met the Swedish Chief of Defence, General Micael Bydén, to discuss the security situation in the Baltic Sea Region. After the completion of the political accession process of Sweden to the Alliance in March this year, the synchronisation and coordination of the military planning between the Swedish Armed Forces and NATO for the defence of the Baltic Sea Region continues on the working level. In April this year, military planners from various NATO commands under the leadership of JFC Brunssum met with the Swedish Joint Force Command to synchronise and coordinate their work.

At the Swedish Naval Base Muskö, COM JFC Brunssum was welcomed by the Chief of the Swedish Navy, Rear Admiral Ewa Skoog Haslum. Adm Haslum briefed Gen Miglietta on the structure and capabilities of the Swedish Navy and Coastal Defences. They also visited a Visby class stealth corvette and the Swedish Amphibious Corps at the Berga Naval Base.

On his last stop during his visit to Sweden, General Miglietta met representatives of the Swedish Army and Air Force. He was introduced in the operational settings of both services, focussing on the defence of the Swedish territory and airspace. “I am very thankful for this deep insight I was provided by my hosts in these two days. The Swedish Armed Forces are truly a formidable empowerment of NATO’s defence posture in the Baltic Sea Region,” Gen Miglietta said at the end of his visit.
