Brunssum, the Netherlands - General Guglielmo Luigi Miglietta, Commander Allied Joint Force Command (JFC) Brunssum, departed for a two-day visit to Spain, on 24th October, 2024.
I am grateful for the steadfast contributions to NATO that Spain continue to give in these turbulent times, and for the commitment to strengthening forces on the Alliance’s Eastern Flank
The tour served to foster cooperation between JFC Brunssum and key Spanish military leaders, who recently took command of the NATO Rapid Deployment Corps – Spain (NRDC-ESP), and NATO Multinational Brigade Task Force Slovakia, both of which fall under the command of JFC Brunssum.
On the first day, General Miglietta was welcomed by Lieutenant General Luis Sáez Rocandio, Commander of NRDC-ESP, at the Santo Domingo Barracks in Valencia.
“Headquarters (HQ) NRDC-ESP is a continuously learning HQ, which has worked hard to adapt to new challenges and to accomplish with the greatest guarantee of success the different tasks assigned by the Alliance,” Lieutenant General Sáez Rocandio said. “Currently, under JFC Brunssum, it is with great responsibility and enthusiasm that we are fulfilling a demanding challenge on NATO's eastern flank, leading an Army Corps in the area of Slovakia and Hungary, thus contributing to the security of the region.”
The visit then continued to the military base "Jaime I" in Bétera, where General Miglietta attended briefings from the NRDC-ESP Staff about land forces deployed on the Eastern Flank, followed by an equipment exhibition to provide an hands-on overview of their capabilities.
General Miglietta’s visit continued the following day, with a trip to Madrid to meet with Spain’s Chief of Defence, Admiral General Teodoro Esteban López Calderón.
"I am grateful for the steadfast contributions to NATO that Spain continue to give in these turbulent times, and for the commitment to strengthening forces on the Alliance’s Eastern Flank, which significantly increases our capabilities to deter threats and defend Europe in accordance with NATO regional plans,” General Miglietta said.
In addition to the leading role of NRDC-ESP and NATO forces deployed in Slovakia, Spanish forces also support deterrence along the Eastern Flank by providing substantial contributions to NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia, the Baltic Air Policing mission, and the deployment of NATO Maritime Groups.
