The commanders of the NATO Response Force 2024 (NRF 24) convened virtually on Monday, February 06, 2024, for a pivotal video conference held by General Guglielmo Luigi Miglietta, the Commander of Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFCBS). The video conference represented an opportunity to formalise the handover of the NRF 2024, which took place at the beginning of the year and to underline the leading role of JFCBS in deterrence and security throughout its area of responsibility with forces on standby, such as the NRF, and deployed such as the Battlegroups on the Eastern Flank
Opening the conference, General Miglietta welcomed the commanders and highlighted the necessity to move from close collaboration during training and preparation phases to a formal command relationship for effective operational deterrence
We must be 100% clear in our messages that any aggressive act will be countered
Addressing the NRF24s readiness during the stand-by period, General Miglietta emphasised the importance of the high readiness targets “to counter any aggression or change in posture with a rapid demonstration of force and the early establishment of a NATO military presence in support of an Article 5 or a Non-Article 5 Crisis Response Operation”.
"I must ensure the complete NRF24 package meets its high readiness targets during the standby period to guarantee NATO’s military response options to crisis," stated General Miglietta.
The Commander shared his deterrence assessments with the NRF Commanders referring to the main current threats, “We must be 100% clear in our messages that any aggressive act will be countered”, he said, calling for a solid defensive position without provocation.
In a notable conclusion, General Miglietta highlighted the comprehensive nature of deterrence, extending beyond military strength. "Deterrence happens in our adversaries' minds", he remarked, urging a renewed warfighting approach to inform daily operations.
The conference progressed with an overview of NRF24, setting the stage for collaborative discussions among the commanders. The event marked a critical juncture in NATO's strategic evolution, emphasising adaptability and unity amid evolving security challenges.
