Recently, Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFCBS) led a NATO delegation to Armenia, a long standing member of NATO’s Partnership for Peace (PfP) programme having been in the programme since 05 October 1994.
This visit has enabled a deeper understanding of the main issues and challenges in this important region
As head of the delegation, Major General Mark Pullan, JFC Brunssum Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans, met with the Armenian Deputy Chief of Defence, Major General Artur Yeroyan, and with the Deputy Head of Defence Policy and Military Cooperation Department (Ministry of Defence), Colonel (ret.) Aram Hovhannisyan. Summarising the visit, Major General Pullan said: “I would like to thank the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Armenia for the very warm welcome we have received and the frank and honest discussions we have been privileged to be part of. This visit has enabled a deeper understanding of the main issues and challenges in this important region. We will take these insights back to our Headquarters in order to further enhance our cooperation.”
The Partnership for Peace programme is based on bilateral cooperation between individual Euro-Atlantic partner countries and NATO. It allows partners to build up an individual relationship with NATO, choosing their own priorities for cooperation.
Activities on offer under the PfP programme touch on virtually every field of NATO activity including: defence reform, defence policy and planning, civil-military relations, education and training, military-to-military cooperation and exercises, civil emergency response, and cooperation on science and environmental issues.
The event was conducted with the intention of developing Cooperative Security to establish a coherent network in support of the execution of future Partnership activities. The visit was dedicated to promoting normalisation in the South Caucasus Area by encouraging the restoration of good neighbourly relations.
