Remembrance Service in Sittard

Brunssum, The Netherlands – Serving British personnel from Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFCBS) have been invited by the Sittard War Graves Committee (SWGC) to participate in the annual Remembrance Sunday Service on 10 November 2024 at the St Peter’s Church in Sittard, followed by an act of remembrance at the Sittard Commonwealth War Cemetery (SCWC).

The Sittard War Graves Committee organises this act of remembrance every year for Commonwealth soldiers killed in action during World War II. The majority of those buried in the cemetery were members of the Scottish Regiments belonging to the 52nd (Lowland) Division, who were engaged in battle in the local area from 18 to 24 January, 1945.

The presence of United Kingdom’s representatives from JFCBS at this act of remembrance highlights the enduring commitments of the NATO Alliance to the ideals of peace and unity, and to remember those who sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom and peace.

During the Act of Remembrance, Major General Mark Pullen, Deputy Chief of Staff Plans and Senior British Officer at JFC Brunssum, laid a joint wreath on behalf of the Headquarters.

The Headquarters’ Senior National Representatives from the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, Royal Navy Captain Mark Hammon and Colonel Bianca Jansen also laid wreaths on behalf of their respective countries. Other wreaths were laid by representatives for the province of Limburg and Sittard as well as other organisations.
