Brunssum, The Netherlands – On 22 May 2024, Commander JFC Brunssum, General Guglielmo Luigi Miglietta, paid a visit to the Chef of Defence of the German Armed Forces, General Carsten Breuer, in Berlin.
We solidified our commitment to the Alliance and our role as a central hub in Europe
Among other things, one focus of the discussion between the two Generals were the reforms the German Armed Forces are currently undergoing and their impact on NATO’s deterrence and defence posture in Central and Eastern Europe.
Gen Miglietta, commented on the purpose of the visit: “I came to Berlin to learn about the transformation of the German Armed Forces to their new structure. We also talked about the importance of Germany as a key player for security in Europe. This in particular is paramount for reinforcing NATO’s Eastern Flank!”
Gen Breuer called the meeting a “very fruitful engagement here in Berlin with Commander Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum, General Miglietta, who reaffirmed Germany’s integral role in NATO’s defence strategy. We solidified our commitment to the Alliance and our role as a central hub in Europe.”
Further topics discussed were the ongoing Exercises Steadfast Defender 2024 and Quadriga 2024. The latter, conducted from 22 – 29 May, will be the largest exercise of German land forces since Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. More than 12,000 troops will practise the alerting and deployment of national and multinational land forces, train the interoperability of NATO troops and contribute to the deterrence along the Eastern Flank of the Alliance. Large parts of the exercise are conducted in Lithuania.
