CRYSTAL ARROW 2025 Strengthens Regional Defence Capabilities

BRUNSSUM, The Netherlands – One of the largest military exercises in Latvia this year is underway: Exercise "Crystal Arrow 2025", which is taking place in Vidzeme region from 5th to 11th May, 2025.

Key components of the exercise include tactical manoeuvring, deep battle planning, and the integration of indirect fire support and close air support in combat operations

This annual event, part of the wider Exercise GRIFFIN LIGHTNING 2025 cluster, is organised by Latvia’s Land Forces Mechanized Infantry Brigade and involves more than 3,000 soldiers and 1,200 military vehicles from both national and Allied forces.

The exercise emphasises the execution of full-scale defensive operations, particularly in urban warfare scenarios. By operating outside of traditional military training zones, participating units are enhancing their readiness for real-life conditions. Key components of the exercise include tactical manoeuvring, deep battle planning, and the integration of indirect fire support and close air support in combat operations.

CRYSTAL ARROW 2025 features participation from a diverse array of military elements, including the NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia, the 17th Battalion of the National Guard’s Riga 1st Brigade, the Latvian Air Force, Military Police, and Logistics Command. Additionally, the exercise includes the first intake of Latvian conscripts, cadets from the Oskars Kalpaks Vocational Secondary School, and students from the Intermediate-Level Command and Staff Officer Course.

A significant focus of the exercise lies in testing and improving the ability of military leadership to plan and conduct brigade-level operations in a realistic environment. Coordination between command units and support services is being rigorously practiced to ensure effective operation execution and logistical sustainability.

This multinational training operation also strengthens the interoperability between the National Armed Forces and NATO partners, reinforcing collective defence capabilities in the region. Alongside combat training, the exercise contributes to increased public awareness and highlights the shared responsibility of national defence.

CRYSTAL ARROW 2025 demonstrates the ongoing commitment to defence preparedness and regional stability by ensuring that military units are equipped, trained, and ready to respond to any security threat.
