Finnish Chief of Defence Visits JFC Brunssum For The First Time

BRUNSSUM, The Netherlands – On 16th April, Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFCBS) welcomed the visit of the Chief of Defence of the Finnish Armed Forces, General Janne Jaakkola. It was the first time after Finland joined the Alliance in 2023 that a Finnish Chief of Defence (CHOD) came to HQ JFCBS.

Finland has formidable Armed Forces of the highest standards, their military is very modern, well trained and equipped, and highly capable

This visit highlighted Finland's commitment to enhancing defence relationships amid evolving global security challenges on the Alliances northern and eastern flank.

During the visit, General Jaakkola engaged in comprehensive discussions with senior NATO officials, focusing on collaborative defence strategies and the importance of joint exercises to bolster interoperability among member states.

The Finnish CHOD was welcomed by General Guglielmo Luigi Miglietta, Commander of JFCBS. General Jaakkola was briefed on current operations and missions led by JFCBS, emphasising the collective defence efforts aimed at securing peace and stability.

Key topics of discussion during the visit included cyber defence, hybrid warfare, and the need for robust intelligence-sharing mechanisms to effectively counter emerging threats. Both parties highlighted the importance of Finland's geographic position and its significant role in the security architecture of Northern Europe.

General Miglietta: “Finland has formidable Armed Forces of the highest standards, their military is very modern, well trained and equipped, and highly capable. Their accession to the Alliance is an important step toward guaranteeing growth and stability within a challenging security environment in the Baltic Sea Region.”

This visit not only reinforced the bond between Finland and NATO – and here in particular HQ JFC Brunssum – but also paved the way for future cooperative endeavours, ensuring a cohesive and resilient defence posture.
