Reinforcing Baltic Security: Lithuania DCHOD at JFC Brunssum

BRUNSSUM, The Netherlands – Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFCBS) welcomed the Deputy Chief of Defence (DCHOD) of Lithuania, Lieutenant General Remigijus Baltrenas, for his first official visit to the Headquarters in this capacity, on 14 April 2025.

Lithuania is a vital ally in the Baltic region. Its unwavering commitment to strengthening its defence capabilities is a model of responsible engagement within the Alliance

Lt Gen Baltrenas was warmly received by the Commander, General Guglielmo Luigi Miglietta. During his visit, the Lithuanian DCHOD received a series of briefings outlining the Headquarters’ structure, its operational responsibilities, and the ongoing planning efforts across its area of responsibility.

Given Lithuania's strategic position in the Baltic Sea region, discussions mainly focused on deepening military cooperation and integrating the new capabilities of the Lithuanian forces into NATO's collective defence posture. Particular attention was paid to the integration into joint training and harmonisation of new Lithuanian capabilities within NATO. The current security situation on the Alliance's northern and eastern flank, in light of Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine, was also a topic of discussion.

General Miglietta emphasized the importance of Lithuania’s contribution to regional security, stating:
“Lithuania is a vital ally in the Baltic region. Its unwavering commitment to strengthening its defence capabilities is a model of responsible engagement within the Alliance. Together with our Lithuanian partners, we continue working to ensure NATO remains agile, capable, and prepared to respond wherever and whenever needed.”

At the conclusion of his visit, Lt Gen Baltrenas summarized: “I am grateful to JFC Brunssum for their professional contribution and dedication to the defense and security of the NATO’s Northern and Eastern Flank in the light of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. Lithuania is investing and developing its military capabilities, namely the 1st Lithuanian Division with all its enablers, thereby strengthening national capabilities to respond to threats. We commit all possible efforts to ensure the harmonization of new capabilities with the defence plans.”

The establishment of the 1st Lithuanian Division in January 2025 marked a significant step in Lithuania’s military development. This new structure will enable deeper integration with NATO forces, strengthen Lithuania's defence posture and enhance interoperability with allied armed forces across the region.
