Strengthening NATO’s Eastern Flank High Level Visit to Latvia

BRUNSSUM, The Netherlands – General Guglielmo Luigi Miglietta, Commander of Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFCBS), and General Luciano Portolano, Chief of Defence (CHOD) of Italy, visited the Latvian Defence Staff Headquarters, in Riga, on 25th January, 2025.

The security of the Baltic States is not just a regional concern, but central to NATO's collective defence.

Hosted by Latvia’s Chief of Defence, the visit emphasised the importance of allied unity in the region. Both delegations were warmly received, reflecting the deep respect and cooperation between NATO Allies.

“Latvia represents the spirit of resilience and commitment at the heart of NATO’s eastern flank,” said General Miglietta. “Your dedication reinforces our collective strength, ensuring peace and stability in the region.”

Following the ceremonial welcome, the Italian and Latvian Chiefs of Defence and General Miglietta held a closed-door meeting to discuss the evolving security environment. The discussions highlighted NATO's strategic initiatives and Latvia's critical contributions.

Following the meeting, General Portolano noted that the security of the Baltic States is not just a regional concern, but central to NATO's collective defence. He also underlined that Italy stands unwaveringly by Latvia and its Allies, contributing to the robust defence posture of our Alliance.

As the delegations proceeded to the Ādaži base for an operational tour and engagement with the Multinational Division North and subordinate Units, JFCBS Commander reflected on the visit’s significance. “NATO’s unity is our greatest strength,” said General Miglietta. “Latvia, as a frontline state, exemplifies the resolve and partnership that define our Alliance.”

At the Ādaži base, operational briefings illustrated to high-level delegations the situation awareness as well as the operational and training activities conducted on the Latvian portion of NATO's eastern flank.

Before leaving Latvia, the two visiting Generals met the Italian national contingent deployed on Latvian soil, bringing their countrymen the greetings and gratitude of the Italian people for their commitment to security and stability.
