Swedish Troops Officially Integrate Into NATO Command Latvia

BRUNSSUM, The Netherlands – On 7th February a formal Transfer of Authority ceremony took place at Camp Valdemar in Latvia, officially integrating Swedish forces into the NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia (MNB-LVA).

Their Swedish battalion is a valued addition to our combat-ready force, enhancing our collective defence efforts and strengthening regional security

During the ceremony Army Chief Major General Jonny Lindfors transferred command of the Swedish battalion to Brigade Commander Colonel Cédric Aspirault, commander of MNB-LVA. This is the first Swedish NATO mission deployment since Sweden became a member of the NATO Alliance on March 7, 2024.

"Having a Swedish battalion in place in Latvia underscores that we are taking our responsibility as members of NATO, “This is part of the new normal for the army. Our mission is to defend Sweden and our allies," said Army Chief Jonny Lindfors.

The brigade's mission is to contribute to deterrence and defence in the region and to ensure stability and security. The brigade is one of eight multinational combat groups NATO has established along its eastern flank. This integration enhances NATO’s overall readiness and reinforces the Alliance’s presence in the Baltic region.

"Their Swedish battalion is a valued addition to our combat-ready force, enhancing our collective defence efforts and strengthening regional security,” stated Colonel Cédric Aspirault, commander of the NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia. “It's truly inspiring to witness all nations collaborating towards our shared mission."

MNB-LVA is led by Canada and has its headquarters in Ādaži, outside Riga. The brigade consists of around 3,000 soldiers made up of forces from 14 NATO countries, including Sweden, Canada, and Denmark.

The ceremony was attended by several participants from Sweden, Latvia, and NATO. Present at the ceremony were the Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Minister of Defence Pål Jonsson, Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard, and Chief of Defence Michael Claesson.

Sweden’s participation in NATO exercises and operations demonstrates its dedication to collective security, improving interoperability with allied forces.
