JFCBS Covid-19 Staff update 6 April 2020

Brunssum, the Netherlands, Monday 06 April 2020

Over the weekend, support amongst Alliance member states continued in the fight against the Corona pandemic. In addition to national efforts, partners undertook to support their respective authorities and societies with medical personnel, equipment, and capacities: the Alliance is coordinating and supporting these efforts with logistical, transportation and medical assistance/advice.

On 03 April, two Spanish military aircraft flew from Hamburg to Torrejón airport near Madrid to deliver 50 ventilators sent by the German government as part of the ongoing collective effort by NATO Allies against the global pandemic. Spain had made this request for assistance through NATO’s Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC). The EADRCC is NATO’s principle disaster response mechanism. The Centre operates on a 24/7 basis, coordinating requests from NATO Allies and partners, as well as offers of assistance to cope with the consequences of major crises such as COVID-19.

On 05 April, The Netherlands delivered two mobile Intensive Care Units (ICU), protective medical equipment and medicine to the island of Saint Maarten in the Dutch Caribbean. The flight was arranged by NATO’s Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) in response to an Emergency Response Mission requirement from The Netherlands. One of the three SAC’s, a Boeing Globemaster C-17, took off on the morning of the 05 April from Eindhoven loaded with the requested supplies

Despite the pandemic, NATO carries on with its core task to provide security for its member nations and the missions it has been entrusted with, in the Baltic States, Afghanistan and elsewhere. In parallel, the robust measures to limit the virus’ spread and minimise the risk to its personnel and their families continue. Everybody shall strictly adhere to the established rules of keeping physical distancing to one another and applying hand hygiene best practice as often as possible. These remain the most effective measures to slow down the spread of the virus over the next weeks.
